Real or Phantom Equity: Which works best?

Do you have any comparative information (or an opinion) of the benefits/drawbacks of real equity (options, restricted stock, etc) compared to Phantom equity? I have a sole-owner client who is trying to decide which approach to take. Any suggestions?
